3 Ideas to connect with nature in November

With shorter days and cooler temperatures, we’re often searching for screen-free activities for children (and grown-ups!) and ways to make the most of nature during November. Here are 3 ideas to connect with nature this month.

1. Slow down and reflect upon the season’s changes

The approaching end of the fall season offers a good a reminder to slow down and take a pause amidst all the changes happening in nature. Studies have shown that viewing nature, even in indoor settings, can aid relaxation and stress recovery.

Make some time everyday to watch and appreciate the complex natural environment, from small details like how leaves quiver in the crisp, cold air, to dramatic colours in the clouds during a golden sunset.

2. Start a nature observation journal

Nature journaling is a great way to build nature connection, curiosity and cultivate wonder for all ages. Try recording your observations, using words and pictures to describe what you hear, feel, and see in nature this month.

Some ideas to consider are: how the cold wind feels on your face, how leaves sound rustling in the wind or which small animals and birds you see. The City of Calgary has a great resource for beginners, with techniques and ideas to get started with nature journaling.

3. Celebrate fall foliage through art

The rapidly changing landscapes during this time of year are a visual treat. Why not capture this moment by creating artwork inspired by autumnal colours? Use everything from bright greens to deep purples, and shades of red, oranges and golden yellows!
